Apple has officially released tvOS 18, bringing a suite of new audio and visual features to compatible Apple TV 4K models. According to Apple’s official release notes, the updated software introduces enhancements designed to improve dialogue clarity, dynamically adjust subtitles, and expand support for 21:9 projection formats.
Enhanced Dialogue and Audio Features in tvOS 18
According to Apple, tvOS 18 features an upgraded Enhance Dialogue function that leverages machine learning and computational audio. This tool separates vocals from background music and effects within an audio track, pushing center-channel sound forward to make spoken words significantly easier to hear. Users can now apply Enhance Dialogue not only when listening through connected HomePod speakers, but also when using built-in television speakers, AirPods, or other Bluetooth-connected audio devices, as well as via supported USB audio outputs.
Visual Upgrades and Projector Support
The updated operating system also introduces automatic subtitle intelligence. According to Apple, subtitles now appear on screen at precisely the right moments—such as when a character speaks a foreign language or when audio is muted—aligning with user behavior on the platform. Additionally, tvOS 18 adds native support for 21:9 aspect ratios, allowing users to play movies and shows on cinematic home projectors without letterboxing.
Availability and Compatibility
According to Apple, tvOS 18 is available now as a free software update. The release is compatible with the Apple TV 4K (2nd generation and later) and the Apple TV 4K (1st generation). Users with automatic updates enabled will receive the software automatically, or they can initiate the download manually through the Settings menu on their device.
