Apple Delays Smart Home Hub Launch Amid Siri AI Development Challenges

Apple has once again postponed the release of its highly anticipated smart home hub, citing ongoing development challenges with its revamped Siri AI assistant. The hardware, reportedly nearing completion, is now expected to launch around September 2026, according to a Bloomberg report.

Siri AI Upgrade Faces Hurdles

The delay is directly linked to Apple’s efforts to integrate deeper artificial intelligence capabilities into Siri. Originally slated for release with iOS 26.4, the upgraded Siri features are now being tested for inclusion in iOS 26.5 and 27 . Issues with lag time, data access, and accuracy are contributing to the setbacks .

Smart Home Hub Features

The smart home hub is envisioned as a central control point for connected devices, also functioning as a communications and information display. It’s expected to feature a roughly 7-inch square display and a design similar to a modest tablet, with the option to be wall-mounted or placed on a speaker-style base . A built-in camera could enable personalized experiences by recognizing users and displaying relevant information.

Software and Integration

The device will run a version of tvOS and feature an interface with round icons, reminiscent of the Apple Watch. While it won’t include a dedicated App Store, it will be able to run Apple applications. The core functionality will revolve around managing smart home products, initiating calls, and displaying information from Apple services like Calendar and Reminders .

Underlying Technology

The current iteration of Siri, codenamed Linwood, combines Apple’s own large language model with technology from Google’s Gemini AI. This integration aims to deliver AI tools such as enhanced web searches, image generation, and a chatbot-style AI assistant, known as Campo .

Privacy Considerations

Apple is reportedly reconsidering plans to have Siri scan personal data, such as text messages, to provide more personalized suggestions. This adjustment may be influenced by growing consumer concerns regarding AI privacy .

Broader Smart Home Plans

Beyond the smart home hub, Apple is reportedly developing other smart home products, including an advanced display with a robotic arm, a security camera, and a new Apple TV .

Apple plans to revamp Siri as a built-in chatbot later this year .
