Apple HomePod, Apple TV 4K Stock Shortages Hint at Impending Updates
Apple retail stores are experiencing limited stock and extended delivery times for the HomePod, HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K, a pattern that often precedes the release of updated hardware. Although not a confirmation of an immediate launch, the dwindling inventory suggests Apple is preparing for recent devices, particularly as both the Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini are due for updates.
Apple’s Product Cycle and Delayed Releases
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the current situation aligns with Apple’s typical product cycle. He notes that Apple has had updated versions of the Apple TV and HomePod mini ready for some time, but has delayed their release while awaiting a more advanced Siri and broader Apple Intelligence rollout. Apple appears to be prioritizing tighter integration between its hardware and artificial intelligence features, explaining the delay despite the readiness of these devices. However, Gurman suggests Apple may proceed with the hardware launch even if the Siri upgrade is further delayed, to avoid holding inventory for an extended period.
Expected Hardware Upgrades
The next Apple TV 4K is anticipated to transition from the A15 Bionic chip to the A17 Pro chip. This upgrade would support Apple Intelligence features and enhance performance for streaming, gaming, and smart home functionalities.
For the HomePod mini, an upgrade from the current S5 chip to a newer version – potentially the S9 or beyond – is likely. This would enable more advanced Siri capabilities. Reports also indicate potential improvements to sound quality, updated connectivity features, and new color options.
Full-Sized HomePod Also Facing Shortages
Interestingly, the full-sized HomePod is also experiencing stock shortages, despite a more recent refresh. While there are currently no strong rumors about a new version, its declining inventory suggests Apple may update it alongside the smaller model to maintain consistency within the product line.
Release Timeline
Apple has already released several products this month, but these home devices remain on hold. If Apple ties their release to the upcoming Siri upgrade, announcements could arrive between late March and September.
