Apple Watch Expands AFib Tracking to Mainland China
Apple has officially launched its Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) History feature for Apple Watch users in mainland China. This expansion brings a crucial heart health tool to a significant market, enabling individuals diagnosed with AFib to closely monitor their condition directly from their wrist.
Understanding the AFib History Feature
Although the Apple Watch has long been capable of detecting irregular heart rhythms, the AFib History feature provides a long-term view of heart health, rather than isolated snapshots. The feature utilizes the watch’s photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor to regularly check the user’s pulse. By analyzing this data, the watch estimates the frequency of AFib signs, a measurement known as “AFib burden.”
According to Apple, the tool is designed for users aged 22 and older who have already received a formal diagnosis of AFib from a physician. It is not intended for self-diagnosis but to aid those living with the condition in better managing their daily lives.
Connecting Heart Rhythm to Lifestyle
A key benefit of the update is its ability to correlate heart rhythm data with daily habits. Within the Health app, users can explore how factors like sleep duration, exercise frequency, and alcohol consumption may influence their AFib episodes.
The system also allows users to download a detailed PDF of their AFib history to share with healthcare providers, facilitating more informed discussions about their heart health. This shifts the conversation from subjective feelings to objective data, providing doctors with a clearer picture of the patient’s condition.
Regulatory Approval in China
The rollout in China was subject to regulatory approval from the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA), as features like ECG and AFib tracking are considered medical or “quasi-medical” functions. With NMPA approval secured, the feature joins other health tools already available to Apple Watch owners in the region, including blood oxygen monitoring and sleep tracking. This launch aligns China with over 150 other countries where the feature has been available since its initial release in the US in 2022.
The Broader Context of Smartwatches and AFib Detection
Apple Watch is FDA-approved for detecting AFib. Research indicates that smartwatches, including the Apple Watch, demonstrate high sensitivity and specificity for detecting atrial fibrillation using PPG technology. The American College of Cardiology notes that the increasing availability of these devices is leading clinicians to encounter more heart rhythm data generated by consumers.
A randomized controlled trial suggests that smartwatch-based AF screening can enhance the detection rate of new-onset AF in patients at elevated stroke risk.
