Apple Watch Compatibility Changes in watchOS 27 Spark Debate Over Siri AI Access
Apple’s latest watchOS 27 update has dropped support for three generations of older Apple Watch models, including the SE 2, Series 6–8, and first-generation Ultra, according to official documentation and interviews with Apple engineers. The decision, aimed at enabling advanced features like Siri AI, has drawn scrutiny over its impact on users in the European Union, where regulatory restrictions have further limited access to the technology.

Cait Dooley, Apple’s senior director of Apple Watch and health products, emphasized that older models “can still be paired with iPhones running the latest software for optimal security updates.” However, users of affected watches will not receive the new Siri AI features, which are optimized for the latest hardware.
The compatibility shift follows a pattern of Apple phasing out support for older devices with major software updates. For example, iOS 17 maintains support for iPhone 8 and later, but watchOS 27 excludes models released as recently as 2022.
Siri AI Availability in the EU
A separate development has further complicated the rollout of Siri AI. Apple initially allowed the feature on Apple Watch in the EU, citing regulatory exemptions. However, the company later announced it would not deploy Siri AI on Apple Watch within the bloc, according to a statement published on September 18, 2023.
This decision stems from the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which requires tech companies to allow interoperability with third-party services. While Apple Watch users outside the EU can access Siri AI, those in the region face restrictions due to the platform’s classification as an “access controller” under DMA rules.
“The EU’s regulatory framework has created a complex landscape for feature rollouts,” said a spokesperson for Apple. “We remain committed to compliance while delivering the best user experience.”
Why the Shift Matters
The compatibility changes highlight a growing tension between hardware longevity and software innovation. While Apple argues that newer models provide “superior performance” for AI features, critics note that older devices—many still functional—face premature obsolescence.
Similar debates have arisen with other tech companies. For instance, Google’s Pixel 4a was dropped from Android 13 support, while Samsung’s Galaxy S10 received extended updates. Apple’s approach reflects a broader industry trend of balancing backward compatibility with the demands of emerging technologies.
