Apple Expands ‘Ultra’ Lineup and Disrupts PC Market with $599 MacBook Neo
Apple is poised to expand its premium product offerings with a new range of “Ultra” devices, even as simultaneously challenging the Windows PC market with the recently launched $599 MacBook Neo.
Apple’s Ultra Ambitions
Following the success of its latest models, Apple is expected to bolster its ultra-premium segment with at least three “Ultra” products this year, potentially encompassing iPhones, AirPods and MacBook Pros. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple may not explicitly use the “Ultra” name for all new models, but they will represent the company’s highest-priced, most feature-rich offerings. Bloomberg
Foldable iPhone Ultra
The first anticipated device is a foldable iPhone, rumored to cost around $2,000. It’s expected to feature a large screen and incorporate technologies like an under-display sensor. Apple may brand this device as the “iPhone Ultra” or opt for a more familiar name like “iPhone Fold.”
AirPods Ultra
Next in line is a high-end AirPods version, potentially named “AirPods Ultra,” building on the existing AirPods Max over-ear headphone line. This new model is rumored to include a camera, computer vision compatibility for Siri, and visual intelligence polling, and will likely be priced higher than the current AirPods Pro.
MacBook Pro with OLED Touchscreen
A new MacBook Pro equipped with an OLED touchscreen is also in development. This addition is expected to significantly increase the device’s price, mirroring previous price increases seen when Apple transitioned to OLED displays in products like the iPad Pro and iPhone X. Gurman suggests the “MacBook Ultra” name could facilitate differentiate this flagship laptop from existing MacBook Pro models.
The Disruptive $599 MacBook Neo
Apple’s recent launch of the $599 MacBook Neo marks the company’s most significant push into the low-end laptop market, aiming to compete with Windows PCs. Bloomberg This move represents a departure for Apple, which historically has focused on premium devices.
A Risk That Paid Off
Gurman notes that Apple would have struggled to create such a product just a few years ago. Advancements in manufacturing technology, particularly in reducing the cost of aluminum enclosures, and the affordability of the A18 Pro chip have made the MacBook Neo feasible. A redesigned macOS, offering more colors and customization options, is also intended to appeal to a younger audience. YouTube
Price Comparison
The MacBook Neo is 45% less expensive ($500) than the MacBook Air M5. For comparison, the Apple Watch SE is approximately 38% cheaper ($150) than the Apple Watch Series 11, and the iPhone 17e is 25% cheaper ($200) than the standard iPhone 17.
The “Neo” Brand
Gurman predicts Apple may continue to produce affordable devices and potentially expand the “Neo” brand to other product lines, considering it a more understandable alternative to the “SE” designation.
Looking Ahead
Apple’s strategy reflects a focus on offering products at multiple price points to maximize market share, while primarily building upon existing product categories. The MacBook Neo, while an exception to Apple’s traditional approach, demonstrates the company’s willingness to innovate and adapt to changing market dynamics. Bloomberg
