Apple’s upcoming smart home hub is reportedly slated for release on October 13th, marking the company’s push into dedicated home automation displays under the leadership of newly appointed CEO John Ternus. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman indicates the device will feature a 6-inch square display available in both countertop and wall-mounted formats, functioning as an Echo Show-like device.
Design and Hardware Specifications of the J490 Smart Display
The device—tracked internally under the code-name J490 and recently spotted in macOS Tahoe 27.6—may resemble the 2002 iMac, utilizing a pivoting display mounted on a half-sphere base. Hardware configurations include a built-in camera, microphone, and a distinct white ring light designed to illuminate users. Apple is also developing a secondary iteration featuring a larger 9-inch display mounted on a robotic arm.
While the hardware forms the physical backbone, the operating system merges features across multiple Apple platforms to showcase the newly launched Siri AI assistant. The interface utilizes face and voice recognition to dynamically adjust content based on who is approaching or speaking to the device. A visitor mode hides personal data when unrecognized users are nearby. For users bypassing facial authentication, Apple includes options for secondary verification, though the system’s facial recognition will not match the high-security standard of iPhone FaceID.
Ecosystem Integration and Smart Home Control
Positioned centrally in domestic environments, the hub manages connected appliances such as door locks and thermostats. Beyond home automation, the software supports video calls, multi-device intercom communications, iCloud photo slideshows, and music streaming. Apple specifically sees the device as a kitchen assistant designed for recipe searches, video playback, and FaceTime calls during meal preparation.
The product launch faces previous schedule adjustments. Originally targeted for a 2024 release, the rollout experienced delays stemming from development challenges associated with Apple Intelligence. With the updated Siri integration arriving this month, the smart display is positioned for its October debut.
