Cuban bibliographer Dr. Araceli García-Carranza Bassetti Dies at 88
havana, Cuba – February 3, 2024 – The José martí national Libary of Cuba (BNCJM) announced the passing of Dr. Araceli García-Carranza Bassetti,a towering figure in Cuban bibliography adn a dedicated member of the BNCJM for 64 years. She was 88 years old.
Born in Guanabacoa on October 10, 1937, Dr. García-Carranza Bassetti devoted her life to the preservation and institution of knowledge, leaving behind an “incalculable” intellectual legacy for researchers both in Cuba and abroad. Her extensive work includes numerous bibliographies, bibliographic repertoires, and contributions to catalogues, books, and magazines.
Throughout her distinguished career, Dr. García-carranza Bassetti received meaningful national recognition, including the Carlos J. Finlay Order (2021), the Emilio Setién Quesada National Library Science Prize for her life’s work (2021), the Catauro prize, and the Félix Varela First Degree Order (2022).
The BNCJM remembers Dr. García-Carranza Bassetti not only for her professional contributions but also for her warmth and dedication, stating she leaves an “indelible mark” on Cuban librarianship and national culture.
