Arizona Wildcats Cruise Past NAU 35-7 in Season Opener

Arizona opened its season with a 35-7 victory over Northern Arizona on Sept. 5, 2026, at Casino Del Sol Stadium in Tucson.

Arizona Offense Accumulates 520 Yards Under Fifita

The Wildcats accumulated 520 yards of total offense during the matchup. Quarterback Noah Fifita completed 22 of 29 pass attempts for 262 yards and two touchdowns, operating at a 76 percent completion rate. The Arizona attack propelled through the first half.

The victory marks the fifth season-opening win for Arizona since 2022 and the third straight season-opening victory under Brent Brennan. Under Brennan’s tenure, the Wildcats hold a combined 136-52 scoring advantage in season openers. “We showed up ready to play,” Brennan told reporters after the game. “Our guys were excited. I thought our coaching staff did a fantastic job preparing them to play.”

Wildcats Defense Restricts Northern Arizona to Negative Rushing

Arizona’s defense held Northern Arizona to 193 total yards, marking the Lumberjacks’ first-half offensive struggles under quarterback Ty Pennington. Most notably, the Wildcats restricted NAU to minus-7 rushing yards, which is the fewest rushing yards allowed by Arizona since facing Stanford in 2006.

“Any time you don’t allow any points from your opponent and you hold them to negative rushing yards, that’s a hell of a day,” Brennan stated. A crucial turning point occurred during NAU’s second possession, a nine-play drive that consumed over five minutes. The drive ended when Arizona edge rusher Dominic Lolesio pressured Pennington on a fourth-and-2 play from the UA 43-yard line, resulting in an incomplete pass and a turnover on downs.

Context and Venue Improvements

The game served as the debut for new stadium lights at Casino Del Sol Stadium, prompting celebratory pyrotechnics following each Wildcats touchdown. Despite a gritty first-half performance from Pennington—who completed multiple first-down throws before his first incompletion on the fourth-down stop—Northern Arizona could not overcome Arizona’s defensive pressure.

Arizona aims to build on this performance as the season progresses under Brennan, maintaining momentum from a balanced offensive attack and a defensive front that controlled the line of scrimmage.
