Arne Slot Questions Premier League’s Reliance on Set Pieces
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has voiced his frustration with the increasing prevalence of set-piece goals in the Premier League, stating that the current style of play is diminishing his enjoyment of the competition. Slot’s comments reflect a broader concern about the tactical evolution of the league and a potential shift away from open, flowing football.
A Changing Landscape in English Football
Slot expressed his dismay, stating, “Most of the games I notice in the Premier League are not for me a joy to watch.” He attributes this shift to the growing competitiveness within the league, where even smaller teams can achieve success through effective set-piece routines. Arsenal, currently leading the league, have particularly excelled in this area, scoring 16 goals from corners – the most in the Premier League this season. Liverpool themselves recently scored three goals from corners in a 5-2 victory against West Ham United.
Differences in Refereeing Standards
Beyond the tactical shift, Slot also pointed to differences in refereeing standards between the Premier League and other leagues, specifically the Eredivisie, where he previously coached. He argued that English referees are more lenient, allowing physical contact that would be penalized elsewhere. “Here, you can almost hit a goalkeeper in his face and the referee still says: ‘Just move on,’” Slot remarked. This perceived leniency contributes to a more physical and, in Slot’s view, less aesthetically pleasing style of play.
Liverpool’s Adaptation and Future Outlook
Despite his reservations, Slot acknowledges that set-pieces are “the fresh reality” of the Premier League. Liverpool have adapted to this trend, becoming proficient in scoring from set-pieces themselves, but the manager hopes for a future where open-play goals are once again prioritized. The club parted ways with set-piece coach Aaron Briggs in December, signaling a potential recalibration of their approach.
Slot emphasized that Liverpool’s recruitment strategy focuses on young players who require time to adapt to the physicality of the Premier League. He believes this approach, while requiring patience, will ultimately yield positive results.
Looking Ahead
As Liverpool continue their campaign, currently sitting fifth in the league, Slot remains committed to his philosophy while acknowledging the challenges posed by the evolving landscape of the Premier League. The team faces a busy schedule, including matches against Wolverhampton, Galatasaray, and a return to Molineux in the FA Cup, providing ample opportunity to test their adaptability and pursue success in multiple competitions.
