Arne Slot‘s Liverpool Future Hinges on Upcoming Matches
Arne Slot must continue Liverpool’s winning momentum against Sunderland and Leeds this week to quell scrutiny surrounding his future. While one journalist revealed how close he came to being sacked, another has dismissed reports linking the Reds with elite Premier League replacements.
The Premier League champions’ title defense has faltered. A poor run of nine defeats in 12 games leading into last weekend placed immense pressure on slot, fueling speculation about his potential dismissal.
A win against West Ham last Sunday was crucial for Slot and Liverpool.
Sources indicated a victory over the Hammers was considered essential for the Dutchman to retain his position, given their significant decline and a considerable £440m (€505m, $600m) summer spending spree.
Fortunately for Slot, Liverpool ended their losing streak with a 2-0 win, thanks to goals from Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo.
However, the situation remains precarious, and Slot needs to build on this momentum when Liverpool host Sunderland on Wednesday night and travel to Leeds on Saturday evening.
Liverpool FC journalist David Lynch told Anfield Index that a loss at West Ham would have resulted in his dismissal: “You knew coming into this that Liverpool needed a win because of the pressure that the manager was under.
“I do genuinely believe that if he had lost this game against West Ham, then that would’ve been the end of arne Slot as Liverpool manager.”
Lynch explained FSG’s potential breaking point: “It seems crazy to say, but you can’t keep losing games and it gets to the point where there is a breaking point no matter how much belief you have in him.
“I think you needed to see a win and a performance; thankfully, I do think that you got both.”
