Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Conan the Barbarian: A New Chapter and Future Projects

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s portrayal of Conan the Barbarian in the 1982 film was a defining moment in his career, catapulting him to Hollywood stardom. After decades and a 2011 remake starring Jason Momoa that failed to gain significant traction, a third installment in the saga is finally moving forward. Schwarzenegger revealed plans for a new Conan film, envisioning a story set decades after his reign as king.

A New Conan Epic

Speaking at the Arnold Sports Festival, Schwarzenegger detailed the concept for the upcoming film. The story will center on Conan ruling his kingdom for forty years, inevitably leading to conflict, magic, and encounters with monstrous creatures. He emphasized the advancements in special effects technology, stating that the studio now possesses the financial capabilities to create a true blockbuster.

Christopher McQuarrie to Direct and Write

The new Conan film will be directed and written by Christopher McQuarrie, known for his collaborations with Tom Cruise on films such as Jack Reacher, Edge of Tomorrow, The Mummy, Top Gun: Maverick, and the recent Mission: Impossible installments.

Studio Shift: From Universal to 20th Century Studios

The rights to the Conan franchise have shifted from Universal Pictures to 20th Century Studios, a subsidiary of Disney and formerly known as 20th Century Fox, which will produce the third installment.

Beyond Conan: Other Potential Comebacks

Schwarzenegger also hinted at potential returns to other iconic roles. Discussions are underway with Dan Trachtenberg, the director of the last two Predator films, regarding a possible return to the Predator franchise. A script for Commando 2, a sequel to the 1985 action hit, is reportedly complete, featuring Schwarzenegger reprising his role as Colonel John Matrix battling terrorists.
