Fall temperatures in Kansas City have risen by 2.2 degrees since 1970, giving the metro area eight more unusually warm days each year and shrinking the window for traditional sweater weather, according to a climate analysis released by Climate Central.
The independent climate research organization evaluated temperature records across 245 U.S. cities, finding that fall warming has touched 98% of the locations analyzed. Nationally, autumn temperatures have climbed by nearly three degrees over the past five decades, with most cities recording at least seven additional warmer-than-normal days compared to the early 1970s.
Human-Driven Climate Factors and Regional Variations
While human-caused climate change is the primary driver of autumn warming in 82% of the cities analyzed by Climate Central, meteorologist and senior engagement specialist Shel Winkley stated in a recorded briefing that human-driven factors were not the leading cause specifically in Kansas City. Across the broader region, fall temperatures have increased at varying rates, with St. Louis and Wichita both recording a 3.9-degree rise, Topeka warming by 3.4 degrees, and St. Joseph seeing a 1-degree increase, according to Climate Central data.
The extended heat carries practical consequences for the region. According to Winkley, the extra warmth prolongs allergy seasons, allows mosquitoes and ticks to remain active longer, pushes air conditioning demand later into the calendar year, and causes fall foliage to arrive later while reducing its vibrancy.
Shifting Temperature Baselines and Historical Extremes
Meteorological fall spans September, October, and November, while astronomical fall begins with the autumnal equinox on Sept. 22. However, local weather patterns show that summer heat frequently persists well past the end of September. Data from the Applied Climate Information System, maintained by NOAA’s Regional Climate Centers, indicates that Kansas City typically experiences its last 90-degree day around Sept. 11, based on 1991–2020 climate normals.

That timeline has shifted in recent decades. Since 2000, temperatures have climbed to 90 degrees or higher in 18 out of 26 years, pushing the average date of the final 90-degree day about a week later in the year. The extreme record for late-season heat occurred on Oct. 30, 1950, when temperatures reached 91 degrees.
