Artists Aivars Vilipsōns and Ivars Miķelsons Bring Joint Exhibition to Liepāja Museum

Sculptor Ivars Miķelsons and graphic artist Aivars Vilipsōns are bringing their artistic collaboration to the Liepāja Museum, where their joint exhibition runs from October 16 to December 6, liepajniekiem.lv reported. The display unites Miķelsons’ physical forms in bronze, wood, and cast iron with Vilipsōns’ drawings, graphics, and paintings in the museum’s small exhibition hall.

Two Artistic Paths Converge in Liepāja

The exhibition title, “Divi SONI Liepājā,” plays on the surnames of both creators. The two artists first met inside the Sculpture Department at the Riga Secondary School of Applied Arts before graduating from the Art Academy of Latvia’s Sculpture Department. Museum public relations specialist Rasa Zālīte noted that the artists bring their work to the coastal city with a touch of humor, stating, If Liepāja doesn’t come to us, then we must come to Liepāja! They are continuing an approximately 45-year friendship and creative cooperation, following and, as Ivars Miķelsons jokingly points out, controlling each other’s artistic work since their student years.

While each creator maintains a distinct artistic signature, both view sculpture as a primary medium for conversing with the surrounding world. They share substantial experience in large-scale joint projects, most notably the “Krodera ābele” (Kroder’s Apple Tree) environmental memorial built in 2020 outside the Valmiera Theatre to honor director Oļģerts Kroders.

Bronze Figures Meet Graphic Lines

Vilipsōns’ contributions showcase the human body, personal observations, and the female form through fine lines and contrasting black-and-white areas. His works range from humorous titles like The Muse Didn’t Show Up After All to public monuments, including a relief near the Aleksandrs Čaks Museum, a tribute to Kārlis Padegs, and a memorial at the Šķirotava station dedicated to residents deported to Siberia.

Miķelsons populates his side of the gallery with torsos, figurative compositions, and distinct series like Iron Ladies and Games with the Planet. Describing their shared aesthetic, Miķelsons explained that their pieces avoid complex conceptual installations in favor of simple moments drawn directly from daily life. Beyond this museum showcase, Miķelsons contributed to the tactile monument “Freedom Monument for Blind People” in 2022, which allows visitors to experience the national symbol through touch.

Liepāja Exhibition Features Graphic Design and Previous Collaborations

The Liepāja exhibition features graphic design work by Katrīna Vasiļevska. This regional showcase follows related collaborative output from the pair, who previously mounted a door-handle themed exhibition titled “Touch Me + Do Not Touch Me” at the Art Gallery “Durvis.”
