Cooperation between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and China serves as a critical anchor for regional stability and economic growth amidst ongoing global geopolitical shifts. Strengthening multilateral ties across trade, technology, and sustainable industries remains essential for maintaining peace and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region, according to Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama).
ASEAN-China Ties Anchor Regional Stability
Speaking in a recent interview reported by Xinhua, the Bernama CEO emphasized that the region must avoid fragmentation into rival or exclusive blocs. Instead, she stated that relations should rely on mutual respect, inclusivity, and open dialogue.
Resisting Fragmentation and Exclusive Blocs
“At a time of geopolitical uncertainty, the region should not be divided into rival or exclusive blocs,” Nur-ul Afida said. She noted that smaller and developing countries require a meaningful voice in shaping an economically dynamic and peaceful Asia-Pacific over the coming decade.
Bilateral ties between Malaysia and China, alongside broader ASEAN-China cooperation, have expanded substantially across trade, investment, infrastructure development, and people-to-people exchanges.
Accelerating the Digital Economy and AI
Beyond legacy trade and products, digital technologies form the foundation of a new global alignment. Digital economy and artificial intelligence present considerable potential for future collaboration.
China’s rapid transformation—visible in large-scale infrastructure projects, widespread digital payments, e-commerce networks, efficient transportation, and integrated online services—offers valuable practical experience for Malaysia and fellow ASEAN member states.
From Pilot Projects to Industrial Scale
Innovation in China frequently transitions from experimental phases to large-scale implementation across industries, cities, and public services, rather than remaining restricted to isolated pilot projects. In the media sector, there has been substantial investment in mobile-first content, video production, digital platforms, data journalism, and artificial intelligence.
Driving Green Growth and Sustainability
In addition to digital infrastructure, the green economy represents a promising avenue for bilateral and regional cooperation. Joint initiatives focusing on renewable energy, electric vehicles, battery technology, and energy efficiency can generate employment while advancing long-term climate goals.
Closer coordination among universities, industry stakeholders, government agencies, and media organizations will help facilitate knowledge-sharing and capacity-building as ASEAN and China pursue sustainable, technology-driven economic growth.
