ASEAN commemorated International MSME Day on June 27, 2024, emphasizing the critical role of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in driving economic resilience and innovation across the region, according to the ASEAN Secretariat. The event featured discussions on policy reforms, digital transformation, and access to finance for MSMEs, with officials stressing their contribution to 50% of regional employment and 30% of GDP, as reported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
What Is International MSME Day and Why Does It Matter?
International MSME Day, established by the United Nations in 2017, aims to recognize the contributions of small businesses to sustainable development. For ASEAN, the day underscores efforts to strengthen MSMEs amid global economic challenges. “MSMEs are the backbone of our economies,” said ASEAN Secretary-General Lim Jock Hoi in a statement. “Supporting them is essential to achieving inclusive growth and reducing poverty.”
How Is ASEAN Supporting MSMEs?
ASEAN has implemented initiatives like the ASEAN SME Development Strategy 2022–2030, which focuses on improving access to markets, technology, and financial services. The bloc also launched the ASEAN Digital SMEs Framework in 2023 to accelerate digital adoption, a priority highlighted during the 2024 commemoration. According to the ADB, 60% of ASEAN’s MSMEs remain underpenetrated by digital tools, prompting calls for increased public-private partnerships.
What Challenges Do ASEAN MSMEs Face?
Despite progress, MSMEs in ASEAN grapple with barriers such as limited access to credit, regulatory fragmentation, and supply chain vulnerabilities. In 2023, the World Bank found that only 35% of MSMEs in the region had formal financing, compared to 70% in East Asia. “Policy coherence across member states is key to addressing these gaps,” said Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Van, an economist at the University of Indonesia, in a ASEAN press briefing.
What’s Next for ASEAN’s MSME Agenda?
ASEAN plans to expand its SME Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program, with a focus on green technologies and youth employment. The bloc also aims to harmonize trade regulations under the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) to reduce costs for small businesses. “The future of ASEAN’s economy hinges on empowering MSMEs to adapt to global shifts,” noted a ADB report released in May 2024.
