The volatility of imported fuels has transformed the ASEAN Power Grid from a regional ambition into an urgent strategic necessity. A connected regional grid reduces exposure to imported fuels, lowers system costs, and converts national energy diversity into a shared strategic advantage.

Realizing this vision requires three critical components: domestic grid readiness, modern market design, and tailored financing. By diversifying the energy mix and sharing resources, the bloc seeks to lower system costs and insulate economies from future geopolitical disruptions in the Gulf.

Diversification and Future Resilience

The Hormuz crisis has accelerated political momentum for energy diversification. The focus has shifted toward increasing the share of renewables and establishing more robust regional oil stockpiles to provide a buffer against future chokepoint closures.
