Indonesia Urges Accelerated Cooperation Between ASEAN and EU for Indo-Pacific Stability

IndonesiaS Foreign Affairs Minister, Retno Marsudi, has called for increased and concrete collaboration between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the european Union (EU) to foster stability and security in the indo-Pacific region. this push comes as geopolitical competition intensifies and both blocs seek to strengthen their partnership. Minister Marsudi emphasized the need to move beyond aligning strategies and focus on tangible joint initiatives.
Strengthening the ASEAN-EU Strategic Partnership
Speaking at the ASEAN-EU Ministerial Luncheon held during the EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum in Brussels, Belgium on November 20, 2025, Marsudi highlighted the importance of implementing real collaboration following the alignment of the ASEAN outlook on the Indo-Pacific and the EU Strategy for Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.
Indonesia played a key role in developing the ASEAN Outlook on the indo-Pacific, which aims to maintain peace and stability in the region through inclusive cooperation. This framework is seen as a crucial approach to navigating increasing geopolitical tensions. The EU Strategy, adopted in 2021, shares similar goals, focusing on lasting and inclusive development, environmental protection, and security cooperation.
Boosting economic Ties with IEU-CEPA
Beyond security and stability, Minister Marsudi also advocated for the swift conclusion and ratification of the Indonesia-EU Complete Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA). The agreement, initially signed in Bali on September 22, 2025, is projected to come into effect on January 1, 2027, and is expected to significantly reduce import tariffs between the two economies.
“The IEU-CEPA would strengthen market access,particularly as global protectionism rises,” Marsudi stated.This agreement is seen as a vital step in deepening economic ties and promoting trade diversification.Indonesia’s Trade Ministry reports that the IEU-CEPA is expected to boost Indonesia’s exports and attract foreign investment.
A Long-Standing Partnership
The relationship between ASEAN and the EU dates back to 1977 and is poised to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2027. The launch of a Strategic Partnership in 2020 solidified the EU’s position as a key partner for ASEAN in achieving long-term stability and inclusive development. This partnership encompasses a wide range of cooperation areas, including trade, investment, security, and sustainable development.
