Asha Sharma Takes the Reins at Microsoft Gaming: A New Era Begins
Asha Sharma has been appointed as the new CEO of Microsoft Gaming, succeeding Phil Spencer in a significant leadership change. The move, announced Friday, positions Sharma—a leader with a strong background in platform development and artificial intelligence—to guide the future of Xbox, a division encompassing console, PC, mobile, and cloud gaming. Sharma’s appointment is somewhat unconventional, as she lacks prior experience directly within the video game industry, sparking both curiosity and skepticism within gaming communities.
From AI to Xbox: Sharma’s Background
Sharma brings a diverse background to her new role. Most recently, she led Microsoft’s CoreAI product organization, responsible for Azure AI Studio, the company’s AI model catalog, and developer tools for Microsoft Copilot. Prior to rejoining Microsoft, she served as COO of Instacart and VP of product at Meta, overseeing Messenger and Instagram Direct. She currently holds board positions at Home Depot and Coupang.
Sharma’s career began at Microsoft after graduating from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management. She later co-founded Porch, a Seattle-based home services company, where she served as COO. She described her return to Microsoft as a decision driven by the opportunity to work with talented people on impactful problems, embracing a growth mindset.
A Familiar Story: ‘Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow’
Interestingly, Sharma is a devoted reader of Gabrielle Zevin’s 2022 novel, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, a story about two friends building a video game company. She has mentioned reading the book annually for the past three years, calling it a “beautiful story.” The novel’s themes of navigating the complexities of art, commerce, and scaling a business resonate with the challenges Sharma will face at Microsoft Gaming.
Priorities and Challenges Ahead
In her introductory memo to Microsoft employees, Sharma outlined three key priorities: prioritizing great games, reaffirming commitment to Xbox’s core console fanbase, and pioneering the “future of play” through new business models and a collaborative platform for developers and players. She emphasized a commitment to preserving the artistic integrity of games, stating that they would not be sacrificed for short-term gains or replaced with “soulless AI slop.”
Sharma’s first major act was promoting Matt Booty to executive vice president and chief content officer, pairing her platform expertise with Booty’s extensive gaming experience.
Microsoft Gaming has experienced significant growth through acquisitions, including ZeniMax Media ($7.5 billion in 2021) and Activision Blizzard ($69 billion in 2023), making it the third-largest gaming company globally. Yet, recent financial results have been mixed, with gaming revenue declining 9% in the most recent quarter and hardware revenue down 32%. The division accounts for approximately 7% of Microsoft’s total revenue and faces pressure to improve profitability.
A key challenge identified by industry observers is instability within Xbox, marked by layoffs and studio closures that have created uncertainty among development teams.
Winning Over the Gaming Community
Recognizing the importance of connecting with the gaming community, Sharma has actively engaged with fans on social media, sharing her Xbox gamertag (AMRAHSAHSA) and listing her favorite games: Halo, Valheim, and GoldenEye 007. She has also demonstrated a willingness to engage with skepticism, responding to accusations of AI-generated social media activity with humor.
Her Xbox profile activity, quickly analyzed by gaming news outlets, reveals a preference for narrative-driven indie games like Firewatch, Gone Home, and What Remains of Edith Finch, suggesting an appreciation for games as an art form. She unlocked her first achievement, in Halo: Master Chief Collection, on January 15, 2026.
Looking Ahead
Asha Sharma’s appointment marks a new chapter for Microsoft Gaming. Her success will depend on her ability to leverage her platform expertise, foster stability within the organization, and deliver on her promise of prioritizing great games while embracing innovation. The industry will be watching closely to see how she navigates the challenges and opportunities ahead.
