Peter Gallagher: Leading Irish Astrophysicist and LOFAR Chair

My dad was a service engineer and mum stayed at home. Their ambition was for their three kids to go to college.

At O’Connell School on the North Circular Road in Dublin, I started showing an interest in science. My mum was very keen for me to study it at college.

Early Life and Education

Peter Thomas Gallagher, born in Clontarf, Dublin, Ireland, is a prominent astrophysicist specializing in solar physics, particularly solar storms and their impact on Earth. He received his BSc from University College Dublin, followed by an MSc and PhD from Queen’s University Belfast. His doctoral thesis, completed in 2000, focused on “Optical and EUV observations of the solar atmosphere.”

Academic and Research Roles

Gallagher currently serves as the Director of Dunsink Observatory and Head of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS). He also holds an adjunct professorship at Trinity College Dublin. His research encompasses a wide range of astrophysical phenomena, including the study of the Sun and its influence on our planet.

Leadership in International Collaborations

Professor Gallagher’s influence extends beyond national borders. He is the current Chair of the LOFAR Radio Telescope ERIC Council. LOFAR (Low-Frequency Array) is a large radio telescope network designed to detect low-frequency radio waves, providing insights into the early universe and astrophysical processes. He also leads the I-LOFAR project at Birr Castle, Ireland’s first research-grade radio telescope.

Gallagher has been involved in numerous groundbreaking discoveries, including contributions to the understanding of deep Earth pulses beneath Africa and research utilizing the James Webb Space Telescope. He has also contributed to lunar-Earth flyby research and investigations into the potential seismic effects of Taylor Swift concerts.

Peter Gallagher has been recognized for his contributions to science, including being named a Chevalier in the Ordre des Palmes académiques. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society (FRAS), a Fellow of Trinity College Dublin (FTCD), and a Member of the Institute of Physics (MInstP).
