Ernando Novais Revitalizes Arizona State Men’s Soccer with New Leadership and Team Chemistry
A shift in leadership has enabled the Arizona State Men’s Soccer Club to take to the field with renewed energy this spring. The revitalization is largely attributed to the appointment of former Sun Devil Ernando Novais as head coach and his focused effort on rebuilding the club’s culture.
International Roots and a Passion for Coaching
Novais, originally from Brazil, has deep roots in Arizona, having arrived as an international student over twenty years ago. During his time at ASU, he was a member of the soccer team and developed a strong passion for coaching. He emphasizes building concepts both on and off the field.
“Working with youth soccer and working in the United States, I’m trying to build different concepts,” Novais said. “Not only necessarily concepts in the field, but out of the field as well.”
Building Trust and a New System
Assistant coach Tyler Khan has observed the team’s positive response to Novais’s methods. Despite the challenge of adapting to a new coaching staff and system, the players have embraced the changes.
“It was a big ask for the players to change the coaching staff and change our system and structure so rapidly,” Khan said. “But I think they’ve received it well, and (Novais’) system has proven to work so far.”
Khan, a 2023 ASU graduate, brings his own familiarity with the club, having played for the team and subsequently joined the coaching staff in August 2023. His close relationship with the players facilitates open communication and understanding.
Leadership and Team Unity
Captain Oluwaseun Babarinde plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between the coaching staff and the players. The graduate defender from Peoria, Arizona, prioritizes transparency and leads by example.
“The chemistry is now gelled really well,” Babarinde said. “Everyone’s bought into his idea and plan for this team and the entire program.”
A “Program Builder” Focused on Individual Growth
Junior goalkeeper Gregory Remy describes Novais as a “program builder” who prioritizes team spirit and individual player development. Remy, who has been with the club since his freshman year, has witnessed Novais’s personal approach to coaching.
“(Novais) wants to build the team around our individual strengths,” Remy said. “He’s extremely focused on developing the program for the future, making it as welcoming for new players coming in.”
Tactical Adjustments and a Focus on Possession
Off the field, Novais is fostering a strong community within the team, while on the field, he is implementing a more possession-based style of play. He is addressing the team’s demand to create more scoring opportunities.
“I’m trying to value the ball possession a bit more,” Novais said. “Try to overload the size a little bit more. Try to switch the point of attack. Concepts that are important in soccer.”
