California Storms Leave Trail of Damage

A powerful atmospheric river system has moved through California, leaving at least six dead and soaking much of the state. Though the main system has passed, dangers remain.

Lingering thunderstorms early Monday pose a mudslide risk,especially in Los Angeles County areas recently burned by wildfires. The scorched hillsides are particularly vulnerable to runoff.

Flood advisories were in effect through Sunday afternoon for Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara counties. Localized showers continued after heavy rainfall on Friday and Saturday.

The National Weather Service warned that even small amounts of additional rain could trigger flooding and rockslides. “Due to the abundant rainfall the past couple of days, it will not take as much rainfall to cause additional flooding/rockslide conditions,” they stated in a Sunday update.
