Auckland Woman Sentenced for Severe Neglect of Dog
Auckland, New Zealand – An Auckland woman has been sentenced to six months of home detention after being found guilty of neglecting a dog named Brock, resulting in the animal’s eventual euthanasia. The sentencing took place in the Pukekohe District Court on March 19, 2026, according to the SPCA .
Details of the Neglect
The SPCA first became aware of Brock’s situation in September 2024, after receiving a call expressing concern for the dog’s welfare . Brock, a white and tan male crossbreed, was discovered tethered to a railing by a large chain that had become deeply embedded in his neck .
Inspectors found Brock to be severely underweight, with his ribs, hips, and spine visibly protruding . He lacked access to drinking water and adequate shelter, and his living area was covered in feces .
Medical Examination and Euthanasia
A veterinary examination revealed extreme emaciation, with no body fat and minimal muscle mass. The chain was surgically removed from Brock’s neck, requiring sedation due to its deep embedding . Further surgery was needed to address the affected tissue.
Veterinarians determined that Brock had suffered unreasonable and unnecessary pain and distress for an estimated three to six months . Due to behavioral issues stemming from the prolonged neglect, the SPCA made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him .
Court Ruling and Disqualification
The woman was convicted on charges of failing to provide proper food and treatment for an injured animal. In addition to the six months of home detention, she was disqualified from owning animals for five years and ordered to pay $250 in legal fees and $500 towards reparations .
The defendant claimed Brock previously belonged to someone who had moved from the property earlier in the year, but provided no further details . She likewise stated she had been away and friends and family were caring for Brock.
SPCA Statement
SPCA chief executive officer Todd Westwood emphasized the severity of the neglect, stating that Brock deserved a better life. He noted that Brock’s condition was clearly visible and that the responsible parties failed to take action . The SPCA offers assistance to pet owners struggling to provide care, including food and medical support .
