2027 Audi RS 5: Plug-in Hybrid Performance Redefined

Audi has unveiled the 2027 RS 5, marking a significant shift for the performance sedan and wagon with the introduction of plug-in hybrid technology. The new RS 5 aims to compete directly with rivals like the BMW M3 and Mercedes-AMG C63 S, boasting over 600 horsepower and aggressive styling.

Powertrain and Performance

The 2027 Audi RS 5 retains the 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine, now paired with a plug-in hybrid system. The combined output reaches 630 horsepower and 608 lb-ft of torque. Edmunds reports this represents a substantial increase in power compared to the previous generation. The RS 5 can accelerate from 0-60 mph in under 3.6 seconds and achieve a top speed of 177 mph.

Design and Variants

The 2027 RS 5 will be available as both a Sportback (sedan/liftback) and an Avant (wagon), offering buyers a choice between practicality and sleek styling. The exterior features aggressive design elements, signaling its high-performance capabilities.

Hybrid System and Range

The plug-in hybrid system incorporates a 25.9 kWh battery (22 kWh usable), enabling an electric-only range of up to 84 kilometers (approximately 52 miles) in mixed traffic. Carwow notes the battery can be charged at up to 11 kW, taking approximately 2.5 hours for a full charge.

Chassis and Handling

Audi has equipped the RS 5 with a specially tuned sports chassis, featuring a five-link suspension system at both the front and rear. Available upgrades include 20-inch (and optional 21-inch) wheels with performance tires, and carbon-ceramic brakes with 440mm front and 410mm rear discs, reducing weight by 30 kg. A new torque distribution system on the rear axle is designed to enhance handling and allow for controlled drifting.

Interior and Technology

The interior features distinctive sport seats and a steering wheel with perforated leather. Two dedicated buttons on the steering wheel – “Boost” for immediate power delivery and “RS” for selecting the optimal driving mode – provide quick access to performance features.

Pricing and Availability

The 2027 Audi RS 5 Sportback has a base price of $79,900. CarBuzz reports that order books are expected to open in early March, with German pricing starting at approximately €2,575,000 for the sedan and €2,615,000 for the Avant.

Future Implications

The RS 5’s plug-in hybrid powertrain hints at the future direction of Audi’s RS models, including the potential for a hybrid RS 6.
