Audi Reveals Hinwil Campus Plans for Formula 1 Entry
The Audi F1 Team has unveiled its architectural plans for a new Formula 1 campus in Hinwil, Switzerland, marking a major infrastructure milestone less than a kilometre from the team’s current motorsport headquarters on Wildbachstrasse. Partial operations at the new Zurichstrasse site are scheduled to begin in the summer of 2026, with full project completion targeted for 2030.
The existing Wildbachstrasse facility will remain fully operational throughout the construction phase before being converted into the team’s dedicated production center and wind tunnel location. Meanwhile, the development and manufacturing of Formula 1 power units will remain based in Neuburg, Germany, alongside the technical center in Bicester, Great Britain.
Mattia Binotto Details the Vision Behind the Zurichstrasse Facility
CEO and team principal Mattia Binotto emphasized that the campus project represents a foundational investment designed to attract and retain elite motorsport personnel.
“Beim Aufbau eines erfolgreichen Formel-1-Teams geht es letztlich um Menschen,” Mattia Binotto stated. “Die besten Ingenieure, Designer, Mechaniker und Spezialisten wollen in einem Umfeld arbeiten, das es ihnen ermöglicht, zusammenzuarbeiten, Innovationen voranzutreiben und ihre bestmögliche Leistung zu erbringen. Der Campus wird uns dabei helfen, genau dieses Umfeld zu schaffen.”
Binotto also noted that the project provides a rare opportunity in modern motorsport to shape the organization’s culture from the ground up rather than moving into an existing facility.
Motorsport History and Long-Term Strategy in Switzerland
Motorsport operations have anchored Hinwil for over 50 years, dating back to 1970, with Formula 1 operations established locally for 33 years starting with the 1993 South African Grand Prix. The current Audi outfit evolved directly from the Sauber team, which competed in over 400 grands prix and achieved a peak fourth-place finish in the 2001 constructors’ championship under Peter Sauber.
Ahead of the team’s official 2026 grid debut, Audi Group CEO Gernot Döllner outlined a gradual development trajectory aimed at making the works team competitive by the end of the decade. The team scored its first points during its debut race in Australia courtesy of Gabriel Bortoleto.
