Austin Wells’ Dominican Roots Shine as He Joins Dominican Team for World Baseball Classic

Modern York Yankees catcher Austin Wells is embracing his Dominican heritage as he prepares to represent the Dominican Republic in the upcoming World Baseball Classic in March. Wells, despite being born and raised in the United States, has deep family ties to the Dominican Republic, a connection he proudly acknowledges and celebrates.

A Family Legacy

Wells’ connection to the Dominican Republic stems from his mother, Michelle Fernández, and her family. His maternal grandfather, Dr. Luis Felipe Fernández, emigrated from San Francisco de Macorís to the United States in the 1950s to specialize in pediatrics. The family maintained a strong bond with their homeland, regularly visiting Casa de Campo in La Romana, where Dr. Fernández owned a villa. These trips became a family tradition, with Wells visiting since the age of five.

According to Arístides Fernández Zucco, Michelle Fernández’s cousin, Austin Wells speaks fluent Spanish and identifies strongly with his Dominican nationality. The family plans to be in attendance to support the Dominican team during games in Tampa and Detroit.

Michelle Fernández herself has a background in baseball, having previously served as the Human Resources Manager for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Rising Star on the Field

Wells is emerging as the starting catcher for the Dominican team, selected by manager Nelson Cruz. He will be joined by Agustin Ramírez of the Marlins as the second catcher. In the 2024 campaign with the New York Yankees, Wells hit .219 with 21 home runs and 71 runs batted in, likewise recording 22 doubles and an OPS of .712.

Dominican Pride

Wells publicly displayed his pride in representing the Dominican Republic by carrying the nation’s flag. He acknowledged his birth in the United States but emphasized his Dominican blood, highlighting the importance of his heritage.

Looking Ahead

Austin Wells’ participation in the World Baseball Classic is a testament to the enduring power of family connections and cultural identity. As he takes the field representing the Dominican Republic, he carries with him a legacy of family tradition and a deep sense of national pride.
