Australia Opts to Bowl First as Steve Smith Ruled Out for Cape Town Decider
Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bowl first in the deciding third Test against South Africa at Newlands, making four team changes that include the withdrawal of senior batter Steve Smith due to a persistent neck issue, Fox Sports reported.

Smith’s absence forces a reshuffle in the Australian batting order for the series finale, with Josh Inglis recalled to the side. Inglis missed the first two Tests of the series after fracturing a finger during the preceding ODI series. Matthew Renshaw will open the batting, while Marnus Labuschagne retains his spot in the lineup. Cameron Green, Cooper Connolly, and Nathan Lyon also return to the starting XI. Scott Boland and Beau Webster were left out of the side, and Nic Maddinson already returned to Australia.
South Africa made one forced change to their playing eleven for the Cape Town Test. Fast bowler Gerald Coetzee comes into the side to replace the injured Anrich Nortje. Proteas captain Temba Bavuma noted that Coetzee provides an enforcer option for when surfaces flatten out during the match.
The series stands level at 1-1 heading into the final match at Newlands. Both squads are competing for crucial World Test Championship points ahead of next year’s final at The Oval. South Africa captured the most recent Test championship cycle by defeating Cummins’ side at Lord’s in June.
Temba Bavuma Points to Past Series Defeats as Motivation
South African captain Temba Bavuma stated that memories of the 2022 series defeat in Australia continue to provide motivation for the squad. Australia dominated the previous tour, securing a 2-0 series victory while rain in Sydney prevented a clean sweep.

There is a massive desire there, especially for the older guys,
Bavuma said, according to Fox Sports. In the last Test series in Australia, they bullied us in their backyard. They played unbelievable cricket.
Bavuma emphasized that the primary motivation for the team centres on securing a path to the World Test Championship final rather than the team’s official Test ranking. He noted that winning the championship mace represents the pinnacle of the format.
I definitely think winning the final rates more highly,
Bavuma said. There is just a little bit more to it. You go there, are at Lord’s, it’s a once-off game. You have to play at your best.
