Australia Launches Pioneering mRNA vaccine Trial for Childhood Brain Tumors
Sydney, Australia – In a groundbreaking advancement for pediatric oncology, Australia has initiated a world-first clinical trial utilizing personalized mRNA vaccines to combat advanced or treatment-resistant brain tumors in children and adolescents. The PaedNEO-VAX study, a collaborative effort between the University of queensland (UQ) and the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), promises new hope for families affected by this devastating disease.
The trial will be conducted across eight leading pediatric hospitals throughout Australia, focusing on young patients with relapsed or unresponsive high-grade brain tumors, including gliomas and medulloblastomas.According to clinical lead Jordan Hansford of SAHMRI, the trial will proceed in two phases: an initial Phase I to evaluate safety, followed by Phase II to assess the vaccine’s effectiveness and its impact on patient survival and overall quality of life.
This innovative approach builds upon the promising results observed with personalized mRNA cancer vaccines in adult patients battling rare and challenging cancers such as pancreatic cancer and melanoma. Researchers will employ genome sequencing and advanced data analysis to identify unique cancer markers within each child’s tumor, enabling the selection of specific vaccine targets.
“We will select tumor-specific vaccine targets,” explained Brandon Wainwright, scientific lead from UQ’s Frazer Institute. Customized vaccines will then be manufactured in Queensland by Southern RNA, with delivery to trial sites anticipated within approximately 10 weeks of patient enrollment. The research is supported by 2.58 million Australian dollars (approximately 1.81 million U.S. dollars) in federal funding, underscoring the national commitment to advancing pediatric cancer treatment. This trial represents a significant step forward in the fight against childhood brain tumors, offering a perhaps life-altering treatment option for young patients and their families.
