Sydney – The Australian government is being urged to strengthen its gender-focused approaches across all crisis responses, recognizing gender equality as essential for global peace, security and justice. This call comes following International Women’s Day and highlights the need for increased support for women-led organizations and meaningful inclusion of women in decision-making processes.

The Link Between Gender Equality and National Security

Human Rights Watch submitted a report to the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Trade in February 2026, outlining gender equality as a critical component of both national and economic security. The submission emphasized the gendered impacts of conflict, crisis, and climate change, as well as the erosion of principles outlined in United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.

Focus on International Treaties and Policy

Human Rights Watch is advocating for Australia to support the development of an international treaty on crimes against humanity, which would strengthen international criminal law protections for women and girls. Specifically, the organization calls for the inclusion of gender apartheid as a recognized crime. Further, Australia is encouraged to expand asylum pathways for women and girls fleeing persecution and to adopt a feminist foreign policy that prioritizes the rights of women and girls in all foreign policy, defense, and national security decisions.

According to Daniela Gavshon, Australia director at Human Rights Watch, Australia possesses the necessary tools to promote women’s rights globally, including a foreign minister committed to gender equality and an ambassador for gender equality. Gavshon stated that by making women’s and girls’ rights a more prominent part of its foreign policy, Australia can become a global leader in this area.
