Singapore and Australia Substantially Conclude Economic Resilience and Essential Supplies Agreement Singapore and Australia have substantially concluded negotiations on a Protocol on Economic Resilience and Essential Supplies to the Singapore-Australia Free Trade Agreement, officials confirmed on April 17, 2026. The agreement follows a commitment made by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on April 10, 2026, to strengthen cooperation on the flow of essential supplies between the two nations. The Protocol formalizes the Australia-Singapore Economic Resilience Dialogue, which will serve as the primary mechanism for collaboration on economic resilience challenges and trade in essential supplies. Senior officials will co-chair the Dialogue to facilitate ongoing coordination. Ministers emphasized the strategic importance of energy security in the bilateral relationship. Singapore is one of Australia’s top suppliers of refined petroleum products, including diesel, even as Australia is one of Singapore’s leading suppliers of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Building on a Joint Statement on Energy Security issued on March 23, 2026, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to meet each other’s energy security needs amid global market volatility. The agreement includes measures to intensify cooperation on the timely movement of essential goods such as petroleum oils and LNG. This will be achieved through enhanced coordination, efficient border and port processes, greater transparency, and early consultation between authorities. Officials also reaffirmed their shared commitment to supporting a resilient, rules-based multilateral trading system, particularly during periods of global disruption. The Protocol aims to strengthen supply chain stability and ensure both economies remain resilient in the face of ongoing international challenges. The joint statement announcing the substantial conclusion of negotiations was issued by Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan, Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Penny Wong, Singapore’s Manpower Minister and Minister-in-Charge of Energy and Science & Technology Tan Spot Leng, and Australia’s Minister for Trade and Tourism Don Farrell. The statement was made during a meeting at the headquarters of Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on April 17, 2026.
