Helena Hein in Critical Condition After Vehicle Strikes Her Outside Electorate Office
Australian politician Helen Hein is in critical condition after a Toyota Landcruiser struck her outside her electorate office in Wangaratta on Monday afternoon. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the incident a deliberate act, though police have not yet established a motive for the collision.
The 65-year-old federal lawmaker, who represents the electorate of Indi, was hit at approximately 3:30 p.m. local time, according to Victoria Police and her family. Bystanders rushed to help Hein and detained the 43-year-old driver until officers arrived at the scene, Victoria Police Acting Superintendent Ash Mason reported. Officers subsequently recovered a knife during a search of the vehicle.
Multi-Agency Investigation Underway Into Wangaratta Collision
Investigators have not yet named the suspect, who is from the rural town of Tarravingy, located approximately 12 kilometers away from Wangaratta. Authorities have not confirmed whether Hein knew the driver prior to the incident.

A multi-agency investigation is currently underway involving Victoria Police, the Australian Federal Police (AFP), the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, and the Joint Counter Terrorism Team. The coordinated response aims to determine the exact motive behind the attack.
Prime Minister Addresses Rising Political Tensions
Political violence remains a rare occurrence in Australia, but government-cited statistics from the Australian Federal Police show an increasing number of reports regarding threatening and abusive behavior directed at politicians over the past year.
Prime Minister Albanese addressed the public broadcaster ABC on Monday evening, stating that the collision appeared to be a deliberate act. While noting he had no knowledge of specific individual threats made against Hein, Albanese warned that the overall temperature of political discourse has risen recently. There is no place for political violence in a democracy,
Albanese said.
