AI-Powered Responsiveness: How Dealerships Are Transforming Internet Lead Management

Auto dealerships are dramatically increasing their responsiveness to online leads, reaching an all-time high in 2026. This improvement is largely driven by the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) powered automation for initial inquiries and a greater emphasis on multi-channel communication. However, the rise of AI also introduces new challenges related to data integration and the critical need for human follow-through when complex customer questions arise.

Record-Breaking Responsiveness

A recent study by Pied Piper PSI revealed that franchise dealerships representing 33 brands achieved an average Internet Lead Effectiveness score of 71 out of 100, a six-point increase from the previous year. Auto Remarketing reports that Infiniti led the industry with a score of 82, a significant jump from 77 achieved by Subaru in the prior year. Cadillac (77), Honda (76), and Acura, Subaru, and Toyota (tied at 75) also demonstrated strong performance.

The Role of AI and Automation

The increased responsiveness is largely attributed to the growing use of AI-powered automation for handling simple inquiries. According to the Pied Piper study, 51% of dealerships now provide a “perfect response” – answering a customer’s question through multiple channels (email, text, and phone) within 15 minutes – double the rate from five years ago. Dealerships are also increasingly utilizing text messaging, with 54% of responses now delivered via text compared to 38% in 2025, and phone calls have risen from 66% to 75%.

The Risks of Digital Handoffs

Even as AI boosts overall responsiveness, it also introduces “digital handoff risk.” This occurs when data fails to transfer correctly between a dealership’s various systems – including the Dealer Management System (DMS), website, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool, AI applications, and communication platforms. Even when a response is triggered, incomplete data or integration failures can prevent a customer’s question from being answered.

Another risk arises when AI encounters complex inquiries and passes them to dealership staff. If staff assume the system is handling the situation or aren’t prepared to intervene, the inquiry can stall. The study found that situations requiring human assistance scored nine points lower on average, and customers were twice as likely to receive no personal response.

The Importance of AI Visibility in Search

Dealerships are also facing a new challenge: ensuring their visibility in AI-powered search tools like ChatGPT. Pied Piper’s new measurement of ChatGPT performance revealed “clear visibility gaps.” While ChatGPT listed the target dealership first 77% of the time, it failed to list the dealership at all in 9% of searches, even when it was the closest dealer with the requested vehicle in stock.

ChatGPT confirmed vehicle inventory only 70% of the time, test drive availability just 36% of the time, and included a direct link to the vehicle on the dealership’s website in only 30% of responses. This highlights the need for dealerships to structure their data to ensure AI discovery.

Maximizing Vehicle Sales Through Remarketing

Beyond initial lead response, effective remarketing strategies are crucial for maximizing vehicle sales. Element Fleet Remarketing defines remarketing as the resale of used vehicles, encompassing market analysis, vehicle preparation, and targeted sales methods. Wheels emphasizes the importance of recouping costs through strategic resale, leveraging multiple channels like employee sales, retail dealers, and online auctions.

Looking Ahead

As AI continues to evolve, dealerships must prioritize seamless data integration, robust staff training, and a proactive approach to AI visibility. Successfully navigating these challenges will be critical for maintaining customer trust, driving sales, and staying competitive in the rapidly changing automotive landscape.
