Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame has reclaimed its spot as the highest-grossing film in cinema history, reaching $2.925 billion worldwide following a theatrical re-release, Espinof reported. The milestone pushes James Cameron’s science-fiction epic Avatar down to second place with $2.9237 billion, according to industry figures cited by the outlet.
The box office standings have shifted back and forth between the two blockbuster titles over several years. Avatar originally debuted in 2009 and held the top spot for a decade until Avengers: Endgame surpassed it during its initial theatrical run in 2019.
Disney Profits from Both High Grossing Films
The financial margin separating the two films sits at roughly two million dollars. Avatar previously recaptured the number-one position in 2021 through its own theatrical re-release, temporarily dropping the Marvel feature into second place. Both franchises now operate under the same corporate umbrella following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox assets in 2019, meaning the media conglomerate profits from the commercial dominance of both properties.
Disney’s broader catalog now includes seven of the ten highest-grossing films in history. The studio scheduled the latest Endgame re-release to build momentum for upcoming slate additions, including the December premiere of Avengers: Doomsday directed by Anthony and Joe Russo.

Future Milestones And The Road to Doomsday
That narrow gap leaves room for future shifts in the rankings. Avatar approaches its 20th anniversary in 2029, offering a natural calendar window for another anniversary re-release that could propel Sam Worthington’s adventure back to the summit. Meanwhile, early ticket pre-sales for Avengers: Doomsday indicate strong audience demand as Marvel prepares its next multi-character crossover event.
