AWS Elemental Inference: AI-Powered Video Transformation for the Mobile Era
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched AWS Elemental Inference, a fully managed AI service designed to automatically transform live and on-demand video broadcasts for mobile viewing. The service aims to help broadcasters and streamers efficiently adapt content to the growing demand for vertical video formats on platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts.
The Shift to Mobile and the Challenge of Video Conversion
Today’s viewers increasingly consume content on mobile devices, favoring vertical video formats. However, most live broadcasts are still produced in the traditional landscape format. Converting these broadcasts to vertical formats traditionally requires time-consuming manual editing, potentially causing broadcasters to miss viral moments and lose audience engagement, according to AWS.
How AWS Elemental Inference Works
AWS Elemental Inference utilizes an agentic AI application to analyze video in real-time and automatically apply optimizations. The service independently handles vertical video cropping and clip generation, executing multi-step transformations without human intervention. It analyzes video and applies AI capabilities without requiring human-in-the-loop prompting.
The service achieves a low latency of 6–10 seconds, significantly faster than the minutes required for traditional post-processing approaches. This “process once, optimize everywhere” method allows multiple AI features to run simultaneously on the same video stream, eliminating the need for repetitive processing.
Key Features
- Vertical Video Creation: AI-powered cropping intelligently transforms landscape broadcasts into vertical formats (9:16 aspect ratio) optimized for social and mobile platforms, tracking subjects and maintaining broadcast quality.
- Clip Generation with Advanced Metadata Analysis: Automatically detects and extracts clips from live content, highlighting key moments for real-time distribution. This can reduce manual editing time significantly, for example, identifying game-winning plays in sports.
Deployment Options
AWS Elemental Inference offers flexible deployment options. Users can create a feed through a standalone console or configure it directly through the AWS Elemental MediaLive console. The service integrates seamlessly with AWS Elemental MediaLive, allowing users to add AI features without modifying their existing video architecture.
Availability and Pricing
As of February 24, 2026, AWS Elemental Inference is available in four AWS Regions: US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), Europe (Ireland), and Asia Pacific (Mumbai). Pricing is consumption-based, meaning users only pay for the features they use and the video they process, with no upfront costs or commitments.
Real-World Impact
Fox Sports has been beta testing the technology, achieving savings of 34% or more on AI-powered live video workflows compared to using multiple point solutions. Ricardo Perez-Selsky, senior director of digital production operations at Fox Sports, noted that the service evolved from a hackathon concept addressing the fact that 90% of Fox Sports Digital content is consumed vertically.
Further features and tighter integration with core AWS Elemental services are planned for release throughout the year, including features to help customers monetize their video content.
