Axelina Johansson Wins Bronze and Sets Swedish Record at World Indoor Championships
Toruń, Poland – Axelina Johansson of Sweden secured a bronze medal in the women’s shot put at the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships, setting a new Swedish indoor record in the process. The competition, held on Friday, March 20th in Toruń, Poland, saw Johansson achieve a personal best throw of 19.75 meters.
A Historic Achievement for Swedish Shot Put
This marks the first time a Swedish athlete has won a World Championship medal in shot put. Johansson’s achievement surpasses her previous Swedish indoor record of 19.72 meters, improving it by three centimeters. The victory is particularly significant for Johansson, who has previously struggled with consistency in major championships, finishing eighth at the 2025 Indoor World Championships and seventh at the 2022 European Championships.
Overcoming Illness to Reach the Podium
Despite waking up on the day of the competition with a sore throat, Johansson delivered a remarkable performance. She received encouragement from national team captain Kajsa Bergqvist, who shared her experience of competing well while feeling unwell. “She said she had had her best competition when she was sick. Then I just felt that then I can have it too,” Johansson recounted.
Competition Results
Johansson’s second-round throw of 19.75 meters initially placed her in second position. Yet, Canada’s Sarah Mitton later surpassed her with a throw of 19.78 meters, pushing Johansson into third. The United States’ Chase Jackson won the gold medal with a winning throw of 20.14 meters. Fellow Swedish athlete Fanny Roos finished sixth with a best throw of 18.96 meters.
Johansson’s Reflections on Her Performance
“It felt so fine!” Johansson exclaimed after the competition. She acknowledged the adrenaline and medication helped her through the day, adding, “I don’t consider my illness has really had time to fully break out yet.” She initially didn’t expect to medal, stating, “No. I thought now I’m sure to throw all six punches. But I didn’t expect a medal.”
A First Global Medal and Swedish Pride
This bronze medal represents Johansson’s first senior global medal. According to SVT, it is the first medal won by a female Swedish thrower at a global championship since Ruth Svedberg’s Olympic bronze in the discus in 1928. “It feels good! It feels good to make history in Sweden, so it’s fun!” Johansson said.
Sweden’s first medal at the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships underscores a positive showing for the nation’s athletics program.
