Axiom Space and Prada Unveil Next-Gen Lunar Spacesuit for NASA’s Artemis III Mission
Italian luxury fashion house Prada and commercial space company Axiom Space have collaborated to design NASA’s next-generation lunar spacesuit, the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), for the upcoming Artemis III Moon mission. The partnership, announced in October 2023, aims to advance human exploration of the Moon by combining Prada’s expertise in materials and design with Axiom’s aerospace engineering capabilities.
What is the AxEMU Spacesuit, and Why Does It Matter?
The AxEMU spacesuit, unveiled in a 2026 update, represents a significant leap in lunar exploration technology. Unlike previous suits, the AxEMU prioritizes comfort, mobility, and human factors, addressing limitations of older designs. According to Axiom Space, the suit will enable astronauts to “access, live, and work on and around the Moon” with enhanced capabilities. Prada’s involvement brings cutting-edge materials and manufacturing techniques, ensuring both durability and ergonomic efficiency.

“Prada’s technical expertise with raw materials, manufacturing techniques, and innovative design concepts will bring advanced technologies instrumental in ensuring not only the comfort of astronauts on the lunar surface, but also the much-needed human factors considerations absent from legacy spacesuits,” said Michael Suffredini, CEO of Axiom Space.
How Did Prada and Axiom Space Collaborate on This Project?
The collaboration began with a shared vision to merge luxury innovation with space exploration. Prada’s history of experimental design, including its 1990s involvement with the Luna Rossa America’s Cup team, provided a foundation for adapting aerospace-grade materials to suit lunar conditions. Axiom Space, which has been developing commercial space systems for NASA, selected Prada to refine the suit’s inner layer, focusing on thermal regulation and flexibility.
Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group Marketing Director, emphasized the partnership’s alignment with the brand’s ethos: “The constantly forward-thinking ethos of Prada for humanity has broadened to his desire of adventure and to brave new horizons: space.”
When Is the Artemis III Mission Scheduled, and What’s Next?
NASA’s Artemis III mission, initially slated for 2025, has been restructured to target a 2026 launch. The AxEMU spacesuit will play a critical role in this endeavor, which aims to land the first woman and next man on the Moon’s South Pole. Axiom Space has stated that the AxEMU is a “commercially developed human system” designed to support long-duration lunar missions and future Mars exploration.
The suit’s prototype, showcased in 2026, includes features such as a pressurized torso, enhanced joint mobility, and a life-support system tailored for the Moon’s extreme temperatures. NASA has yet to release detailed timelines for the suit’s testing phases, but Axiom Space has confirmed that final adjustments are underway.
What Challenges Remain for Lunar Spacesuit Development?
Despite advancements, challenges persist. The Moon’s harsh environment—characterized by temperature swings from -173°C to 127°C and exposure to radiation—requires materials that balance protection with flexibility. Additionally, the AxEMU must accommodate extended periods of extravehicular activity (EVA), necessitating improvements in oxygen recycling and waste management systems.
Axiom Space has not disclosed specific technical hurdles, but the collaboration with Prada suggests a focus on lightweight, durable fabrics that can withstand these conditions. The success of the AxEMU could set a precedent for future space suits,
