Azores Tourism Declines Amid Flight Cuts and Higher Fares

Passenger arrivals to the Azores dropped every month during the first eight months of the year, totaling 300 mil arrivals, with half of those coming from inter-island flights, SAPO reported. Visitors arriving from outside the country failed to reach 50 mil during the same period. The decline stems directly from reduced airline capacity, triggered by the elimination of routes such as the Porto to Ponta Delgada connection and Ryanair’s departure from the archipelago.

Market Domination and Skyrocketing Ticket Prices

With Azores Airlines and TAP dominating the local market, the archipelago faces a stark reduction in flight frequencies and a sharp drop in overall tourist numbers. Ticket prices have quadrupled, prompting projections of even fewer visitors reaching the islands in the coming months. SAPO reported that the heavy concentration of tourism in São Miguel and the peak summer months is stripping long-term value and economic benefit from the wider island chain.

Comparing Regional Tourism Strategies

Aviation expert and SAPO columnist Pedro Castro criticized the current management approach for failing to view the Azores the way authorities view the Greek islands, where dynamic connections foster steady growth in mobility. Castro noted that Greek destinations successfully utilize ferries and airplanes working in tandem to sustain year-round movement.

Future of Azores Airlines and Island Mobility

As the year draws to a close, Azores Airlines must be transferred to private hands to comply with European Union regulations and avoid potential penalties. The ongoing challenges surrounding accessibility and mobility form the core discussion of the aviation and tourism podcast Everything’s Up in the Air, which releases new episodes weekly on SAPO and standard audio platforms.
