Greens and CDU Begin Coalition Talks in Baden-Württemberg

Following a closely contested state election, the Green Party in Baden-Württemberg has initiated exploratory talks with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) to form a new state government. The move aims to secure a stable and reliable governing coalition, building on their existing partnership since 2016.

Election Results and Political Landscape

The Green Party emerged as the strongest force in the March 8th election, securing 30.2% of the vote, narrowly ahead of the CDU’s 29.7% . Despite the close results, both parties secured an equal number of seats in the state parliament – 56 each – creating an unusual stalemate.

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party garnered 18.8% of the vote, marking a significant gain . The Social Democratic Party (SPD) experienced its worst-ever performance in a state election, receiving only 5.5% of the vote . Other parties, including the FDP and the Left Party, failed to surpass the 5% threshold.

Exploratory Talks and Coalition Formation

Green politician Cem Özdemir emphasized the importance of continuity and stability in government, stating that the discussions will focus on forming a reliable administration for the next five years . He highlighted the major challenges facing the state, including economic transformation, geopolitical issues, future prosperity, and environmental protection.

The CDU has been tasked with determining the time and place for the exploratory talks . A continuation of the Green-CDU coalition is widely considered the most viable option for establishing a governing majority, as other parties have ruled out cooperation with the AfD.

Exploratory talks serve as a preliminary stage to assess common ground and determine the feasibility of a joint government coalition. Successful completion of these talks will pave the way for formal coalition negotiations.
