Bahrain’s football association has formally demanded the points from their 2-0 Arabian Gulf Cup defeat against Qatar after the Gulf Football Federation threw out their initial protest on technical grounds. The dispute centers on Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo, who featured in the tournament opener at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Sports City Stadium in Jeddah despite carrying a five-match suspension issued by FIFA.

The Regulatory Dispute Over Madibo’s Eligibility

Following the dismissal of their initial protest, the Bahrain Football Association issued a public statement on X urging the General Secretariat of the Gulf Football Federation to intervene independently. Bahrain pointed to Paragraph 7 of Article 19, which grants the General Secretariat the competence to investigate violations on its own initiative even if match officials missed them during play.

Bahrain also highlighted Paragraph 8 of the same article, which dictates that a failure to file a formal protest within the specified period does not render a violation void. The association argued that this provision gives the General Secretariat independent authority to address substantive matters affecting a match’s validity rather than leaving enforcement entirely up to opposing teams.

Under Paragraph 4 of Article 55, fielding an ineligible player requires that the offending national team forfeit the match 0-3. Bahrain contends that Madibo’s participation violates this regulation, stemming from a suspension he picked up for a violent challenge on Canada’s Ismael Kone during the second round of the group stage at the 2026 World Cup.

Tournament Implications in Group Two

Because Qatar exited the 2026 World Cup after the group stage—playing only one additional match against Bosnia and Herzegovina—Madibo’s five-match ban carried over into regional competition. If the Gulf Football Federation ultimately overturns the result or the General Secretariat steps in to apply the forfeiture rule, the standings in Group Two would shift dramatically.

Meanwhile, Qatar would drop to third place with zero points from the opening match.

The Bahrain Football Association has asked the General Secretariat to exercise its authority under Article 19/1 to examine the merits of Madibo’s participation directly, independent of the rejected procedural protest, and to inform the association of the final decision.
