Israeli conductor Bar Avni is gaining international recognition following her win at the 2024 La Maestra competition in Paris, where she also received five additional prizes. Her debut album, set for release in February 2026, showcases her innovative programming and musicality.

Early Life and Education

Born in Israel, Avni initially trained as a percussionist before transitioning to conducting. She studied with renowned conductors Yoav Talmi, Martin Sieghart, and Ulrich Windfuhr. She has also assisted conductors including Gustavo Dudamel, Klaus Mäkelä, Myung-Whun Chung, and Matthias Pintscher, gaining valuable experience in the field.

La Maestra Competition and Subsequent Success

Avni’s breakthrough came in 2024 when she won the prestigious La Maestra competition in Paris [Enticott Music Management]. This victory led to collaborations with the Paris Mozart Orchestra and Claire Gibault, and paved the way for her debut album.

Debut Album: “Symphonies in 3 Movements”

Avni’s first album, to be released by Alpha Classics in February 2026, features the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine [WFMT]. The program includes works by Charlotte Sohy, Darius Milhaud, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, and Igor Stravinsky. The album is titled “Symphonies in 3 Movements” after Stravinsky’s featured piece [Alpha Classics Facebook].

The album highlights Sohy’s Symphony “Grande Guerre,” composed between 1914 and 1917 but only premiered in 2019, alongside Milhaud’s Petite Symphonie and a sparkling symphony by C.P.E. Bach.

Recent and Future Engagements

From 2021 to 2024, Avni served as Chief Conductor of the Bayer Philharmoniker during her Bayer Kultur residency [IMG Artists]. In the 2025/26 season, she will premiere “The White Book” by Laura Bowler, with text by Nobel laureate Han Kang, composed for and sung by Barbara Hannigan. This work is a co-commission by the London Symphony Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony, and Copenhagen Philharmonic.

Beyond the Concert Hall

Avni is dedicated to music education and outreach, conducting workshops in schools, hospitals, and corporate events. She believes in the power of conducting to enhance communication, body awareness, and self-confidence, creating inclusive experiences for all participants.
