Barbara Bright-Patterson, Newfoundland Marketing Pioneer, Passes Away at 92

Barbara (Bobba) Bright-Patterson, a long-time resident of St. John’s, Newfoundland, and a veteran of the marketing and advertising industry, passed away peacefully at Chancellor Park on March 12, 2026, at the age of 92. Her life was marked by a spirit of adventure and a dedication to her craft and loved ones.

Early Life and Career

Born in St. John’s, Barbara’s family relocated to Ontario during her teenage years. She began her professional career in Toronto, working in various marketing and advertising companies. Her early career fostered a lifelong passion for travel and photography.

A Life of Travel and Connection

Barbara’s adventurous spirit led her to numerous destinations, beginning with a memorable trip to Jamaica in 1958 where she met her husband, Lionel Patterson. She continued to explore the world, with frequent trips to Cuba, even well into her 80s. Beyond international travel, she cherished trips around the bay, enjoyed musical theatre, and maintained close connections with friends through correspondence.

Family and Legacy

She is predeceased by her daughter, Juanita States; husband, Lionel Patterson; sisters, Elizabeth (Betty) Cooper and Faith (Shishi) Keates; brother, Edward Bright; parents Alice (née Dawe) and George Bright; and special cousins, Grace Tilley and Ida Mullet.

Barbara is survived by her granddaughters, Angelise States (Duncan Wallace) and Alexandra States (Liam Morrissey); great-grandson, Felix Morrissey; son-in-law, Robert States; and beloved friend, Lois Hicks.

Funeral Arrangements

Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd, St. John’s, on Wednesday, March 18th, from 2-4 p.m. And 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will take place at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Thursday, March 19th, at 2 p.m. Carnell’s Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
