Actor Barry Keoghan will reprise his role as Jonny McGee in Jonny Boy, a new five-part Netflix prequel series exploring the character’s origin story, according to reports from Deadline and The Irish Times. The project expands the gritty universe of the hit crime drama Top Boy.
Production Details and Creative Team
According to Deadline, the five-part series will be written by Top Boy creator Ronan Bennett. Ali Abbasi is attached to direct, as reported by The Irish Times. Keoghan originally appeared as Jonny McGee, an antagonist and high-ranking Irish mob member who distributed drugs in London for his uncle Tadgh McGee, during Season 5 of Top Boy.
Keoghan and his business partner Des Byrne will co-produce the prequel through their banner, Wolfclub Productions. Cowboy Films is also producing the series. In a joint statement reported by Deadline and The Irish Times, Wolfclub Productions said, “We pitched our vision and idea to Netflix and the executive producers and they were so supportive in wanting to bring our passion project forward, exploring Jonny McGee’s origin story through a new bold lens.” Filming is scheduled to begin in 2027, according to The Irish Times.
Expanded Executive Production Team
The series draws backing from a broad lineup of executive producers. According to Deadline, Charles Steel and Alasdair Flind serve as executive producers for Cowboy Films, alongside Ronan Bennett for Easter Partisan Films. Additional executive producers include Keoghan and Byrne for Wolfcub Productions, Aubrey Drake Graham and Adel “Future” Nur for DreamCrew Entertainment, and Maverick Carter and Jamal Henderson for SpringHill Studios, a Fulwell Entertainment label.
Additional Top Boy Universe Expansions
Jonny Boy is not the only expansion greenlit by Netflix for the franchise. According to Deadline, the platform has also greenlit a working-titled series named Jaq, which will focus on BAFTA-winner Jasmine Jobson’s character from the main series. Ryan Calais Cameron serves as the writer and creator for Jaq. Executive producers for that project include Steel and Flind for Cowboy Films, Bennett for Easter Partisan Films, Calais Cameron, Jobson, Graham, Nur, Carter, and Henderson.
