Bayern Munich Faces Disciplinary Action After Fiery Draw with Bayer Leverkusen

Frankfurt/Main (dpa) – The German Football Association (DFB) sports court has rejected Bayern Munich’s objection to the yellow-red card issued to Luis Díaz and has suspended offensive player Nicolas Jackson for two games. Bayern will be without Jackson for their upcoming Bundesliga matches against Union Berlin on Saturday and at SC Freiburg on April 4th.

Jackson’s Suspension Confirmed

Jackson received a straight red card in the 42nd minute of the match against Bayer Leverkusen following a video review for a serious foul. The DFB’s decision is legally binding, meaning Jackson will miss the crucial games against Union Berlin and SC Freiburg. The red card stemmed from a high tackle on Martin Terrier.

Díaz’s Appeal Dismissed

The DFB also dismissed Bayern’s appeal against the suspension of Díaz. The court stated that the referee’s decision was not “seriously, obviously and objectively incorrect beyond any doubt.” This means Díaz will also be unavailable for Bayern’s next Bundesliga game against Union Berlin.

Referee’s Admission and Bayern’s Criticism

Referee Christian Dingert admitted after the game that the second yellow card shown to Díaz for alleged simulation was a mistake, stating, “If I see the pictures now, I wouldn’t give it like that again.” The incident involved a challenge from Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Janis Blaswich.

Bayern Munich strongly criticized the refereeing performance, with honorary president Uli Hoeneß calling it “the worst performance by a team of referees that I have ever experienced in a Bundesliga game.” CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen also urged the DFB to “improve the level of performance of its referees.”

Reaction to Bayern’s Response

Former national player and Bayern professional Dietmar Hamann criticized Bayern’s aggressive approach, stating, “That’s not worthy of a world club. Even in defeat – which it wasn’t – you have to acknowledge with respect and dignity that mistakes are made or not.”

Match Context

The match between Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich ended in a 1-1 draw. Aleix García opened the scoring for Leverkusen, even as Luis Díaz equalized for Bayern. Bayern Munich had Nicolas Jackson and Luis Diaz sent off but held on in a dramatic 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga on Saturday. The draw allowed Borussia Dortmund to close the gap on Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga table to nine points.
