Grégory Patat Departs Aviron Bayonnais Amidst Internal Strife

Grégory Patat has left his position as manager of Aviron Bayonnais, concluding a tenure marked by initial success followed by growing tensions with club president Philippe Tayeb. The departure comes after a period of internal discord and a perceived lack of trust from the club’s leadership.

Early Success and Rising Discontent

Patat took over Aviron Bayonnais in 2022, succeeding Yannick Bru. He achieved immediate positive results, guiding the team to qualification for the Champions Cup and, in 2025, to a Top 14 final phase appearance – the club’s first in 42 years. This initial success was bolstered by the performance of Camille Lopez.

Fractured Relationship with President Tayeb

Despite the on-field achievements, a rift developed between Patat and President Philippe Tayeb following the 2023-2024 financial year. Tayeb reportedly began seeking a successor, questioning Patat’s managerial abilities and desiring a leader “capable of taking the club to a new level.” A particularly contentious meeting occurred in late October, just before a victory against Montauban, where Tayeb criticized Patat’s leadership, even suggesting Laurent Travers should capture over.

Internal Conflicts and Player Dynamics

The discord extended to internal club dynamics. Tayeb questioned Patat’s authority, citing instances like a player’s birthday celebration attended by teammates. Patat expressed concerns about decisions made without his consent, including the departure of players he wished to retain and the selection of assistant coaches. He also raised objections to scheduling decisions, such as a friendly match against Biarritz.

Patat Seeks Resolution

Growing weary of the situation, Patat proactively approached the board of directors, seeking an agreement to terminate his contract. He anticipated a downturn in results and wished to resolve the situation before it deteriorated further. He is reportedly in discussions with Brive, a Pro D2 team, for the next season, and his departure allows him to potentially recover a portion of his remaining contract.

Tayeb’s Perspective

Tayeb acknowledged Patat’s departure but downplayed the notion of a forced exit, stating, “He leaves the ship in the storm… But I’m not fooled, it’s to sign elsewhere, I know it.” He also expressed frustration with criticism from supporters and the media, particularly regarding his handling of the contract extension process and the pursuit of Laurent Travers. Tayeb stated he initially offered Patat a contract extension with conditions, but was pressured by the board to finalize the deal.

A meeting with the players is scheduled to announce the news. Grégory Patat was unreachable for comment.
