Wes Nance Appointed Circuit Court Judge in Bedford County, Virginia

Bedford County Commonwealth’s Attorney Wes Nance will transition to a judgeship for the county’s Circuit Court on April 1, 2026, succeeding James W. Updike after his 48 years of service. The appointment was announced on March 19, 2026.

Succession and Transition

Nance will continue to serve as Commonwealth’s Attorney through the end of March. Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Christopher Dolen will then assume the role of acting Commonwealth’s Attorney until a special election is held this fall to fill the remainder of Nance’s term. Dolen, a Republican, intends to run in that election. WDBJ7 reports that Dolen expressed his honor at serving in the interim and his commitment to working with Bedford County law enforcement.

James W. Updike’s Legacy

The incoming judge, Wes Nance, acknowledged the significant legacy of the retiring James W. Updike, stating, “His career, his impact, and his legacy will never be forgotten.” Nance also expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to have practiced law before Judge Updike for the past 24 years and his humility in being selected as his successor, recognizing he could never fully replace him. WSET highlighted Nance’s sentiments regarding Updike’s long and impactful career.

Background

James W. Updike, a former Bedford County Commonwealth’s Attorney himself, was initially appointed to the bench in 1995. WDBJ7
