A Renewed tradition: From Bonfire to Giant Puppet
for years, the Befana celebration in Padua included a traditional bonfire. However, in 2022, a significant change was implemented to prioritize ecological responsibility. The cultural association Teatro Invisibile, in collaboration with the city administration and the fire department, introduced a massive 7-meter puppet constructed entirely from recycled waste materials [[1]]. This innovative approach has become a hallmark of the Padua Befana celebration,replacing the bonfire while maintaining the symbolic “burning” of the Befana.
Festivities at Prato della Valle
The event at Prato della Valle included a performance by the Dreaming Academy, a marching band, and costumed characters, creating a lively and festive atmosphere. Children were delighted by the distribution of complimentary stockings,a traditional element of the Befana celebration. La Befana is a well-loved figure in Italian folklore,frequently enough described as a kindly,gift-bearing witch who delivers presents to children on Epiphany Eve (January 5th). Legend says she was asked by the Three Wise Men to join them on their journey to find the baby Jesus, but she declined.
