About Chaoyang District

Chaoyang District is a central urban district of Beijing, bordering several other districts including Shunyi, Tongzhou, Daxing, Fengtai, Dongcheng, Xicheng, Haidian and Changping [1]. It covers an area of 470.8 square kilometers (181.8 square miles) [1] and, as of November 2020, had a population of 3,452,460, making it the most populous district in Beijing [1]. The permanent population reached 3.439 million by the complete of 2024 [2].

A Hub for International Exchange

Chaoyang District serves as a significant center for international activity in Beijing. It is home to nearly all of China’s foreign embassies, 90% of the capital’s international media organizations, 80% of international organizations and chambers of commerce, over 70% of international investment companies and regional headquarters, more than 65% of foreign-invested financial institutions, and 50% of the foreign population [2]. International communities are concentrated in subdistricts like Wangjing, Maizidian, Asian Games Village, Sanlitun, and Jianwai [2].

Beyond its diplomatic role, Chaoyang District is a key area for science, technology, culture, and sports in Beijing. Zhongguancun Chaoyang Park is a national high-tech park focused on developing industries such as mobile communications, fresh energy, advanced equipment, and biomedicine [2]. The district too boasts numerous cultural and athletic facilities, including the Workers’ Stadium, the National Olympic Sports Center, and the Capital Library [2]. The district’s GDP increased by 5% year-on-year, and total retail sales of consumer goods remain the highest in the city [2].
