Ben Jones, the actor and politician best known for playing mechanic Cooter Davenport on the hit television series “The Dukes of Hazzard,” has died at the age of 84. According to public statements from his family and representatives, Jones passed away following a long period of declining health, leaving behind a legacy that spanned both the television screen and the halls of the United States Congress.

Television Stardom on The Dukes of Hazzard

Jones achieved widespread fame portraying the lovable, gap-toothed mechanic Cooter Davenport on “The Dukes of Hazzard,” which aired on CBS from 1979 to 1985. As Cooter, the loyal friend to Luke and Bo Duke who kept the General Lee running, Jones appeared in all 142 episodes of the series. According to historical television archives, he became a fan favorite and later embraced the character off-screen, opening Cooter’s Place—a series of museums and stores dedicated to the show located in Tennessee and Virginia.

Transition from Acting to Politics

Before and after his time in Hollywood, Jones maintained an active role in public service and politics. Born on December 25, 1941, in Tarboro, North Carolina, Jones attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before working as a journalist and political activist during the civil rights and anti-war movements. According to congressional records, Jones transitioned fully into electoral politics in the late 1980s, running as a Democrat. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Georgia’s 4th congressional district from 1989 to 1993.

Later Life and Cultural Legacy

Following his defeat in the 1992 Democratic primary after redistricting, Jones returned intermittently to acting, voice work, and writing, while remaining engaged in public commentary. According to interviews with the actor over the years, he viewed his dual career in entertainment and politics as a natural extension of his deep connection to working-class Southern culture. Survivors and memorial arrangements are being coordinated privately by his family.
