London to Host Inaugural Team Marathon
Benchmark Sport has launched Team Marathon, a new mass participation running event. The first event is set for May 22, 2027, in London, with further cities set to follow.
A Departure from the Relay Format
The format demands a synchronized effort. Unlike traditional relays, Team Marathon requires all four members to start simultaneously. Each participant covers 10.55km, reuniting at the finish line to record a collective team marathon time. According to Benchmark Sport, this structure is intended to foster camaraderie and shared experience, differentiating it from existing relays.
Designing for Connection
To keep the group dynamic alive, organizers are centering the course layout around music stages, spectator viewing areas, and a central race village. These hubs are designed to ensure that teammates, supporters and the event itself remain connected from first start to final finish.
Capitalizing on the Social Shift
The move follows a clear evolution in how modern runners engage with the sport. Benchmark Sport CEO Nick Keller noted that running has evolved from a largely individual pursuit into one of the world’s most social participation movements.
The numbers support this trend. Figures show that the number of Strava Clubs quadrupled in 2025, and 80% of 18–24-year-olds are choosing to participate in events with others. Benchmark Sport developed the new format to bridge the gap between traditional performance racing and participation-led challenge events.
Leveraging Industry Pedigree
Benchmark Sport is leaning on its track record to anchor this launch. The company is known for delivering the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay, which has hosted more than 100,000 participants across 86 races in major global cities since 2008. The organization intends to roll out the format following the London debut.
