Berlin’s Olympic Bid Faces Hurdles as Financial Concerns and Historical Shadows Loom
Berlin is pursuing a bid to host the Summer Olympic Games, potentially in 2036, 2040, or 2044, but faces significant challenges including financial constraints, public skepticism, and the complex legacy of the 1936 Games. The city hopes to capitalize on the enthusiasm generated by the recent Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, but securing the Games will require overcoming substantial hurdles.
Leveraging Olympic Momentum
Following Germany’s strong performance at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, organizers in Berlin are aiming to harness the resulting national pride to bolster their bid. “There’s no other event in the world that brings as many countries together as the Olympics,” stated Kaweh Niroomand, Berlin Olympic Commissioner, in an interview with Courthouse News. Niroomand, who also manages Berlin’s professional volleyball team, BR Volleys, emphasized the potential benefits for both elite and grassroots sports, as well as increased public interest.
Financial Concerns and Public Opposition
Despite the potential benefits, Berlin’s bid is hampered by the city’s precarious financial situation and a degree of public weariness towards large-scale projects. The bid itself is estimated to cost up to 6 million euros (over $7 million). This expenditure is drawing criticism, particularly given existing concerns about public transit costs and cuts to social services. Elif Eralp, a candidate for mayor representing the Left Party, questioned the allocation of funds, stating, “People feel like they’re on the wrong end of a joke when there’s suddenly 6 million euros for the Olympics.”
Recent polling indicates that approximately two-thirds of Berlin residents oppose hosting the Olympic Games. Concerns center on financial sustainability and environmental impact.
Navigating a Competitive Landscape
Berlin is not the sole German contender for the Games. It faces competition from Munich, Hamburg, and the Cologne-Rhein region to turn into Germany’s nominee. The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) practice of rotating the Games between continents adds another layer of complexity, as the timing of a European Games remains uncertain.
The Shadow of 1936
A bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics would coincide with the 100-year anniversary of the 1936 Berlin Games, which were infamously used as a propaganda tool by the Nazi regime. This historical context has proven controversial, with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier recently deeming the idea “historically problematic.”
Infrastructure and Economic Impact
Niroomand argues that hosting the Olympics could attract federal and private funding to improve Berlin’s infrastructure, including housing and transportation. He points to the potential for upgrading sporting facilities to benefit both elite athletes and youth sports programs. However, a study by Peichi Chang, Farid Ahmen, and Isabelle Houlbert published in Frontiers in Business, Economics and Management, found that the economic impact of hosting the Olympics varies significantly depending on pre-existing infrastructure. Cities that overspend on modern venues, like Rio de Janeiro in 2016, may see limited economic gains, while those that effectively plan for post-Games apply, like Beijing in 2008, can experience a more positive impact.
Decision on the Horizon
Berlin’s Olympic bid will be evaluated by the German Olympic Sports Federation later in 2026. Niroomand believes Berlin’s strong sporting culture and numerous sports clubs give it a competitive edge. However, securing the Games will require convincing both Berliners and the federation of the bid’s viability and benefits.
